You don’t have to deal with jaw pain and mouth guards and ice are not your only options for treatment.
Are you:
Struggling with pain in the side of your face with activities such as chewing, yawning, talking, speaking or laughing?
Finding yourself waking up in the middle of the night or in the morning with a deep achy feeling in your jaw?
Experiencing headaches, jaw pain, ringing in your ears (tinnitus), or loss of appetite
Having pain with opening and/or closing of your mouth
Being told that you are grinding your teeth
If so, these might be signs that you are having irritation in your TMJ or temporomandibular joint, otherwise known as your jaw joint. TMD or temporomandibular disorder, is characterized as irritation of the temporomandibular joint.
Your TMJ is the joint responsible for connecting your jaw bone to your head and articulates on either side of your head in front of your ears. It is responsible for allowing your jaw to open and close in order to perform activities of daily living such as eating and speaking.
If you have been suffering with these symptoms and feel like you have only been given the option to use mouth guards, ice, heat, or pain medications and either want a different option of haven’t seen any results when you use these options, then we’d love to help you at Samson.
What TMJ/TMD treatment looks like at Samson:
When you come in to Samson Strength and Performance Physical Therapy with TMD or TMJ issues, you will be provided with 1 on 1 care for 1 hour where your doctor of physical therapy will perform a thorough evaluation.
Your physical therapist will begin by performing a deep dive into your medical history, your pain triggers, your limitations, current exercises and your future goals.
Following your medical history, your doctor of physical therapy will look at your jaw mechanics, strength of your muscles, range of motion in your neck and jaw, areas of tenderness and perform special testing to find the ROOT CAUSE of your pain.
Once your PT has found the root cause of your issues, your physical therapist will begin treatment that day! You won’t have to wait to get started.
Treatment for TMJ or TMD can look very different depending on what the root cause of your pain is.
Your doctor of physical therapy will sit down with you and provide you with a plan of care that addresses all of your concerns and impairments.
For example, patients that experience increased mobility in the jaw will need customized exercises to help to reduce range of motion, mitigate pain, and correct jaw mechanics and alignment.
However, patients that are experiencing clenching of their jaws, especially at night, will be provided with dry needling (if appropriate), pain modulating exercises, and sympathetic down regulation exercises.
Those are just two examples of the different approaches we will take in order to reduce pain and irritation, improve quality of life, and get you back to activities pain free!
